In 1980, Merle Karusoo staged a play titled “I Am Thirteen”. More than 30 years later, in 2012, this legendary production inspired Von Krahl’s young troupe to create a play about today’s 13-year-olds. By public and troupe demand, Von Krahl’s open-air production “13” is back on stage in June 2013 with performances in the urban garden of Tallinn Creative Hub Kultuurikatel.
Performances: May 29, 30, 31 and June 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 at 18:00.
The performances are FREE. To reserve a seat, please contact email@example.com. Reservations become invalid 15 minutes before the show starts.
Location: Kultuurikatel urban garden (Põhja pst 35, Tallinn), entry opposite the Fish Market.
What the critics say:
“As Karusoo gathered material for her play from essays written by 13-year-olds, Ashilevi’s gang has done the same with today’s 13-year-olds. The young Von Krahl troupe portrays various problems and conflicts that this particular stage in life presents, and does so with wit and joy and without going over the top, and that is pretty cool.” Janar Ala, Postimees, 18.06.2012
“In conclusion, Ashilevi’s “13” is a robustly stylish mutt, marking every tree and leaving other mutts seemingly mundane messages, but when you gather all the messages together, without forgetting to read between the lines, it adds up to a great deal more than a hefty dose of laughter. And even those, who only get a good laugh out of it, have received a lot.” Kairi Prints, Sirp 10.08.2012
This June, Von Krahl’s young troupe moves into Tallinn Creative Hub’s urban garden, a junk-filled backyard right next to the city centre, and makes it a secret garden for city kids for ten days. In “13”, the Kultuurikatel urban garden turns into a border state between the child and adult worlds. The spectators get to see how people standing on the edge of childhood and adolescence perceive life and what goes on in their minds. This backyard state is run by 13-year-olds – they who have everything, both childish faith and fantasy, and who, at the same time, have nothing, being completely dependent on people older, smarter and more powerful than them. The air is filled with a young vibe and the kids make the rules. The audience is offered a rare visit.
