The rose it had opened, but afternoon followed. When the shadows lengthened and the nightingale chanted, as if sentenced to death it turned faint with whiteness. And when the nights vast horn of metal sounded, the flower faded, still sighing for the crystal of morning.
Federico Garcia Lorca's (1898-1936) works as both a poet and a playwright are characterized by effervescent surrealism mixed with dark natural lyricism. A year before the writer fell victim to the pro-Franco authorities, he wrote the play Doña Rosita the Spinster and the Language of Flowers where he discusses a theme that surfaces in his works time and time again: the waste of life when waiting for something. Yet Lorca never forgets for a moment that the human is nothing more than a part of nature and thus always at the mercy of something bigger and more powerful, the rules of which are not to be disputed. The fury of nature is indeed simultaneously captivating and scary for it always bears the seal of inevitability. Much like life that sometimes makes a decision for us, the perception of death accompanies every moment of the perfection of life like a merciless companion. However, since death is far from being the end of everything in the Spanish culture and worldview, Lorca finds in his characters' external lethargy a new and intensive internal – and why not even surrogate – life that compensates the reality put on hold.
