MARK RAVENHILL

In 1987 he graduated from Bristol University (drama).

Worked as a director at Soho Poly, a new writing theatre in London .

When his short plays was once presented in fringe theatre Finborough,

one of the spectators had highly appreciated them

it was Max Stafford-Clark, former Artistic Director of

The Royal Court Theatre (1978-1993),

one of the most prominent British directors.

Max Stafford-Clark asked Ravenhill if he had a large play

for Stafford-Clark’s touring company Out of Joint,

and Ravenhill wrote for him “Shopping and Fucking”.

It was co-produced by Out of Joint and The Royal Court Theatre,

premiered in October 1996, and became a principal event of the 90’s British theatre.

His following plays Mark Ravenhill wrote for Actors Touring Company

theatre group, working with modern versions of classical plays or plots.

It was “Faust” (1997), where Faust was a postmodernist philosopher,

and “Handbag” (1998), where in parallel temporary lines

heroes of Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Serious” prequel lose

and find baby at railway station, and two today’s homosexual couples,

male and female, join to born their child.

These years Mark Ravenhill worked as a literary director at Paines Plough,

new writing theatre company, and participated collective project

“Sleeping Around” a modern version of Artir Schnizler’s La Ronde (1998).

In 1999 Max Stafford-Clark commissioned to Ravenhill

a new play for Out of Joint: “Some Explicit Polaroids”.

Long work of playwright and group resulted with its premiere

in November 1999.

In 2000 the Out of Joint’s production visited

different countries and festivals (including Bonner Biennale).

In many countries the play is produced and translated.
