Ghost In The Machine
Ghost In The Machine
Children’s theatre for adults about different fear mechanisms, based on the dreams of the cast
Director Mart Koldits:
Fear has always been one of the main means through which power, media, economy or culture rules over a person. This can also be done by another person or – from a certain point of view – also by the person him/herself. Fear weakens and causes suffering. Fear can turn your whole life into a nightmare or living death. But despite this – and precisely because of fear – people do not change their lives. Or rather, see no possibility to even do it, because fear is blinding. Often so blinding that people do not understand how they act because of fear. Fear makes some fight, some surrender; some become completely paralyzed.
So what are we afraid of anyway, what are the mechanisms that make fear operate inside us, what the hell is fear anyway and where does it come from? These are the issues we base our rehearsals on and our sources of inspiration are the dreams of company members.
The title, “Ghost in the Machine”, is a quote from the history of philosophy. This is how the English philosopher Gilbert Ryle called the treatment of person in Cartesian dualism that divides the human person into two separate substances – the body and the mind or the machine and the ghost in the machine, according to Ryle’s ironical comment.
“GHOST IN THE MACHINE” is the title of the joint work by MART KOLDITS and Class of 2006-2010 of the Drama School of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre that will be made public on April 25 at the Von Krahl Theater. Tickets on sale!
