The West is a big tavern where nobody is invited.

That is the basic metaphor for the new production by Akse Pettersson, a new generation talent of Finnish theatre.
Von Krahl’s actors squint their eyes and make their fingers look like pistols. A saloon is erected into the theatre hall where drinks are only served to the bold. Where whores carry knives in their stockings and the stormy night hides a hundred desperados hungry for revenge. This is the wild west where anyone can become free.

Because the west is a game that anyone can play.

Von Krahl Theatre (Est. 1992), founded and lead by Peeter Jalakas, used to be the most feared theatre in Estonia. Legend had it that whenever you stepped inside their blackbox to see a show, the actors would scream, get naked and puke on your best clothes. Those were the days. The crazy Von Krahl punks used to do it in the name of pure art. Now they do it in the name of love.

Akse Pettersson (b. 1984) has recently risen to fame as the spokesperson of the Y-Generation in Finnish drama thanks to his last big success “Kaspar Hauser” (2014, Q-Teatteri). He is the artistic director of Takomo Teatteri in Helsinki and plays guitar in the band häXjesus. Now he and his fellow countrymen, set designer Jaakko Pietiläinen and actor Joonas Heikkinen, have sailed south over the Gulf of Finland to work with the actors of Von Krahl Theatre.

Music used in the performance:
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – “Nothin'”
Neil Young – “The Great Divide”
Loreen – “Euphoria”
Andreas Scholl – “Ombra Mai Fu” (from George Frideric Händel’s opera “Xerxes”)
Bonnie “Prince” Billie – “Wolf Among Wolves ”
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson – “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”
