Music THE VON KRAHL GROUP

One-time happenings/performances are artistic reactions to the lectures held in Von Krahl Academy. The performances took place every Friday at Von Krahl Theatre: 10., 17., 24., 31. of October, 7., 14., 21. of November 2008. The last, eighth performance is part of the performance-event that celebrates the termination of the 90th of anniversary of the Estonian Republic at the 28th of November 2008 in the “Estonia” concert hall.

The performances are part of the Von Krahl Academy autumn-session “Is there life after capitalism?”. In autumn 2008 an international group of artists gathered at Von Krahl Theatre to take part in the lectures given at Von Krahl Academy and to ask the question: “Is there life after capitalism?”. Two months of lectures, two months of actions. Two months full of questions and answers.

During the two month long Academy period the artists stay at Von Krahl, in the old town of Tallinn from morning till late at night. Every week begins with a gathering where the themes of the current week’s lecture are discussed. The lectors of Von Krahl Academy form a very diverse group with themes ranging from global warming to new enlightenment theory, from world’s economy to free media. Read more about the topics and the lectors here. Every lector brings along his/her own point of view on world’s future and the answers to the question “is there life after capitalism?” are diverse and often contradictory.

The artists usually work in groups of two or three. The aim is to find an adecuate artistic reactions to the themes presented by the lectors. Also to discuss and argue. The artists walk on the streets, ask people questions, shoot short films, present happenings, reherse with the band. Every friday a performance is presented to the public at Von Krahl Theatre. We could call the performances a happening, an etude. This is postdramatic theatre where a linear story is not important. The atmosphere, the form of the performance and the ideas of the performers play the main role. There can be a punk concert, light and sound installations, drumming sessions on the stage. There are re-played scenes from other performances. There are choreographic scnenes, etnographic fairy-tales, solo-songs on the stage. There are advertisements, experimental films and much more seen on the screens. The artists have no limits neither concerning the form nor the content. At Von Krahl Academy they can experiment with ideas that they can’t put in life anywhere else. And the ideas spring from the themes of the lections.
