About the lecture:

Peak Oil? Don't Panic! The Transition from oil dependency to local resilience.

Rob Hopkins is the founder of the Transition movement, and author of The Transition Handbook. His talk will offer an overview of the peak oil concept, and why an understanding of it is so pivotal to successful navigation of the next few years. He will also discuss why peak oil and climate change need to be seen as two aspects of the same issue.

The bulk of his talk will look at the Transition movement which is emerging as a grassroots response to these twin challenges, and which is growing rapidly around the world. Transition is a positive, solutions-focused response which seeks to engage ordinary people in creative responses, in moving their communities towards relocalisation. Communities are starting to grow their own food, set up their own energy companies and print their own money. Rather than waiting for complacent government to act, Transition initiatives start the process of rebuilding local resilience themselves, working with local businesses, schools and a range of other organisations.

His talk will set out the principles on which Transition is founded, and will be illustrated with examples of what communities are already doing. It will be an inspiring and positive talk that will give you a new sense of what might be possible, and how your community might be able to thrive in terms of great uncertainty.
