There is no doubt that Kristian Smeds is currently Findlands most outstanding and daring theatre director. His unexpected and highly personal takes on classics are famous, sometimes even notorious and make theatre festival circuits from Moscow to Brussels. They require a new type flexible actor – just the kind trained by Von Krahl Theatre in collaboration with the University of Tartu`s Viljandi Culture Academy.
Four-year period of workshop-based rehearsals are now over and both the director and the brand new professionals are ready to show something that has never been seen in Estonian or in Finnish theatre field.
Multi-talented actors are pure in their energy and fierce in their passion for theater. Without of course forgetting the humour and free-flowing joy of improvisation.
Smeds Ensemble´s and Von Krahl Theatre´s coproduction 12Karamazovs is not a classical play but a state of mind on which the whole crew has initiated. It is a statement of both modern Russia and postmodern Estonia; full of punk attitude, odd slavic traditions, switched male and female roles and a numerous surprises on the way.
It is a show not to be missed.
